We have found that support and education contribute to the success and length of time a woman is able to breastfeed her baby. That is why The Lactation Center is staffed with a board certified Lactation Consultant as well as specially trained Breastfeeding Educators who are committed to helping mothers succeed in breastfeeding their babies.
Trinity Mother Frances (TMF) has been recognized by the Texas Department of Health as a Texas Ten Steps Hospital, a designation indicating that we support the health of future Texans and we provide care that is sensitive to the needs of a breastfeeding mother.
We have been recognized by the Texas Department of Health as a “Mother Friendly Worksite” due to our efforts to encourage employees to continue breastfeeding after they return to work by providing the time and location needed to express milk for their babies. All new mothers at TMF benefit from The Lactation Center as well, in that it offers a comfortable and individualized space to express milk or breastfeed your baby in private.
The Smith County Public Health Department works closely with TMF and provides WIC (Department of Women, Infant, and Children) breastfeeding peer counselors for our facility, on a part-time basis. These counselors have breastfed their own children and have received training in order to work with, support and encourage new moms on personal level.
Hear What Our Patients Say
Share your inspiring story about care you received at The Lactation center.
Every mother wants to do what is best for her baby and choosing whether to breastfeed or formula-feed your baby is for each couple to decide, but we strongly encourage breastfeeding due to the numerous advantages it offers you and your baby, with effects reaching all the way into adulthood.
Breast milk is nature’s perfect food for your baby, providing nutrition superior to infant formulas. By breastfeeding, you provide your child with protection against several common childhood illnesses including middle ear infections, common viruses and viral diarrhea. Babies who are breastfed have fewer problems with spitting up, colic and constipation, and it has been shown to be protective against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Other benefits include:
• Reduced risk of childhood cancers, juvenile onset diabetes and Hodgkin's Disease
• Decreased incidence and severity of allergies
• Better visual and oral development
Women who breastfeed benefit from reduced risk of breast, ovarian and uterine cancer, as well as osteoporosis; and they experience faster recovery time after childbirth. Breastfeeding is also more convenient and less expensive than formula-feeding.
How We Can Help

• Re-starting breastfeeding after you have stopped
• And more
Before or After Your Hospital Stay
Physicians, midwives or nurses may refer an individual to The Lactation Center or an individual may contact us directly at any time. And we do not require that a mother give birth at Mother Frances Hospital to utilize the services of The Lactation Center. We are here to serve all breastfeeding mothers, and are committed to creating healthy lives for the people of east Texas.
To ensure the well-being of both the mother and her baby, we work closely with other care providers and send routine summary reports to Primary Care providers following each visit a patient makes to The Lactation Center.
During Your Hospital Stay
Following the birth of your baby, your Labor Nurse will help get you and your baby started with breastfeeding. We have found it is crucial to your breastfeeding success that we take advantage of your baby's readiness to feed in the first hour following their birth.
During your hospital stay, you will be offered an individual consultation to assess your baby’s feeding style and help you with any breastfeeding difficulties you may be experiencing. You are welcome to request to see our board certified Lactation Consultant, who is a registered nurse, qualified in the areas of lactation, newborn and postpartum care. Or you may request the assistance of a Breastfeeding Educator, who has received specialized training in lactation and breastfeeding at any time.
Breast Pump Rental & Purchase
Breast pumps are meant to compliment breastfeeding, not replace it. Choosing the right breast pump, when needed, can make all the difference in both initiating and sustaining breastfeeding. The professionals in The Lactation Center can assist you in selecting the breast pump and accessories that meet your individual needs.
