DIABETES COLLEGE FOR CHILDREN SCHEDULED
TYLER, TX -- Trinity Mother Frances Health System is offering a free, two-day Children’s Diabetes College June 16 and 17 at Mother Frances Hospital’s Wisenbaker Conference Center, located at 800 E. Dawson. The “Diabetes Through The Ages” event is designed to provide children and parents with valuable information on living with diabetes and staying healthy.
The Diabetes College will include interactive workshops and activities on nutrition, body image and taking responsibility for diabetes management. The program will offer instruction by the staff of Trinity Clinic Endocrinology. Space is limited. Early registration is encouraged.
Barbara Anderson, PhD, of Children’s Hospital in Houston will be the guest speaker. She will host discussions for children and parents.
Day one of the Diabetes College is for diabetic patients ages 8 to 15 and will be held from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., with a dinner for children and their families scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Day two is for children of all ages and their parents and will be held from 8:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., with breakfast and lunch provided.
“Patients who develop diabetes as a child are far more likely to have health complications such as high blood pressure, and kidney and heart disease,” said Meg Reitmeyer, MD, a Trinity Clinic endocrinologist who will be providing instruction at the Diabetes College. “We will focus on how diabetes changes at different times in the life of a child as they move from early childhood into young adulthood. Although diabetes is a serious disease, it can be treated. With exercise, proper nutrition, following your doctor’s advice and keeping a positive attitude, you can maintain a healthy lifestyle and continue to enjoy life’s everyday experiences.”
At the parents' meeting on Saturday, Dr. Reitmeyer will speak about the physical changes a child goes through and Dr. Anderson will discuss the psychological and emotional changes.
The Diabetes College is made possible by the Trinity Mother Frances Health
