Acute Myocardial Infarction Care

Mother Frances Hospital has been committed to providing leading edge cardiac care since 1983, when it opened the first heart program in the area. Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics is dedicated to quality care and bringing not only technology breakthroughs but innovations in care delivery. Patients entering the American College of Cardiology (ACC)-certified Chest Pain Center are managed using standards recommended by the ACC.

Heart attacks occur when there is blockage in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. The longer an artery remains blocked, the more potential there is for heart muscle damage. Fortunately, there are procedures available that unblock the heart using balloons or stents to open up the artery.  These procedures are done in a cardiac catheterization lab by an interventional cardiologist. Time is heart muscle; the faster care is delivered, the better chance the patient has for a more positive outcome.

CODE STEMI: Life-Saving Heart Attack Protocol The time between emergency transport of an acute heart attack patient and a life-saving hart catheterization is critical. To best utilize the vital minutes during transport, the Cardiac Team at the Trinity Mother Frances Heart Institute and the physicians and staff at Mother Frances Hospital’s Emergency Care Centers in Tyler and Jacksonville are now using Code STEMI (ST-segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction), a system that since being implemented at Trinity Mother Frances in February 2006 has reduced the time between transport and treatment of acute heart attack victims from greater than 135 minutes to less than 90 minutes.

The Code STEMI initiative includes a collaborative effort among outlying hospitals, multiple EMS companies, Flight For Life and Mother Frances Hospital-Tyler. Once a person is identified as a Code STEMI patient, he or she is transported to Mother Frances Hospital-Tyler via any emergency transport service for life-saving treatment in the cardiac catheterization labs.

In 2007 Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas has named Mother Frances Hospital-Tyler as a Blue Distinction Center (SM) for Cardiac Services. Blue Distinction is the Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies’ nationwide program that will create an unprecedented level of transparency with two goals: engaging consumers to enable more informed healthcare decisions and collaborating with physicians and hospitals to improve quality outcomes and affordability. A key component of Blue Distinction is a specialty center program that offers the best practices and standards of care in cardiac care. The process used to select Blue Distinction Centers (SM) is based on clinical data supplied by hospitals. Each facility’s structure, processes and care outcomes are rigorously evaluated. The criteria for designation include nationally endorsed quality measures, developed in collaboration with medical experts and professional organizations.
